Artist's Description

Virginia spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), pressed specimen. This is one of the specimens prepared by the English botanist John Clayton (1694-1773) who lived and worked in the British colony of Virginia in what is now the USA. Clayton's specimens were studied and classified by European botanists, including Dutch bontanist Jan Frederik Gronovius and Carl Linnaeus. Gronovius named the genus Claytonia in 1739, while Linnaeus in 1753 gave this plant its binomial name. The label at lower left identifies this specimen as the syntype. This item is part of the collections held at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
