Artist's Description

Vincenzo Lunardi (1759-1806), Italian balloonist and the first aerial traveller in England. Lunardi made his ascent from the Moorfields Artillery Grounds, London, on 15 September 1784. This was the first balloon ascent in England, and it made Lunardi famous. He went on to make many more ascents in front of large crowds, drawn by the novelty of the occasion. He was secretary to the Neapolitan ambassador, honorary member of the Honourable Artillery Company of the City of London, and Royal Archer of Scotland. Artwork published in 1786.
