Description
Cooling towers. View of three cooling towers silhouetted by the sun. Steam is rising from all three towers. A cooling tower is used for cooling water from power stations. It does this by bringing it into contact with a rising airstream. A small portion of the water is evaporated and a major portion is cooled. The hot liquid is pumped into the top of the unit where it drips though a series of perforated plates. It is here that it will meet the airstream which is produced naturally or mechanically. Cooling towers eliminate the problems of thermal pollution in masses of water. Photographed at the Fiddler's Ferry power station, Widnes, England.
