Artist's Description
Victor Alexander Haden Horsley (1857-1916), British neuroscientist, endocrinologist and surgeon. Horsley studied at University College London where he spent most of his career as a professor. He also worked at the Brown Institute and the National Hospital for Paralysis and Epilepsy. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1886), he was awarded the Society's Royal Medal (1894) for his research on the nervous system, the thyroid gland, and related surgeries and treatments. He was knighted in 1902. Horsley was serving as a surgeon in the British Army in Mesopotamia (Iraq) in the First World War at the time of his death. He is buried in Amarah War Cemetery.
