Description
Vernier calipers. These are calipers (a type of measuring device) that have a Vernier scale to allow accurate measurements. Here, two sets of jaws at left are used to obtain external (lower jaws) and internal (upper jaws) measurements. The jaws are moved (using the wheel at centre left) to cover the distance to be measured. The value is read off the scale from the oval area (also at centre left), which includes the Vernier scale that allows increased accuracy of measurement. The scale here is given in both centimetres (lower scale) and inches (upper scale). There is also a moveable rod (protruding at far right) that is used to obtain measurements of depth.
