Artist's Description
USS Holland as training submarine. USS Holland (SS-1) submarine being used for training by midshipmen (Naval Cadets) at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, USA, circa 1901-1902. Designed by Irish engineer John P. Holland (1841-1914), this submarine was originally launched in 1897 as Holland VI. It was purchased in 1900 by the US government for 150,000 US dollars. It was then modified and commissioned later that year as the first US Navy submarine. The first commander was Lieutenant Harry H. Caldwell (probably at centre left). Decommissioned in 1905, it was later sold and exhibited until being broken up in the 1930s.
