Description
US astronaut John Glenn (born 1921), Mercury training. Glenn in the Mercury Procedures Trainer at the Space Task Group, Langley Field, Virginia, USA. This link-type spacecraft simulator allowed the astronaut the practice of both normal and emergency modes of systems operations. This training took place in 1960. Within two years of this image being taken, Glenn would become the first American to orbit the Earth, doing so on the Friendship 7 spacecraft on 20 February 1962. He was lifted into orbit on a Mercury Atlas (MA-6) rocket. After orbiting the Earth 3 times, Friendship 7 landed in the Atlantic Ocean around 5 hours later.
