MODEL RELEASED. Ultrasound in pregnancy. Pregnant woman having her abdomen scanned by ultrasound to monitor her foetus. The ultrasound operator moves a hand-held transducer (white) over the woman's abdomen. The transducer emits high frequency sound waves which are reflected off internal structures. These reflections are detected and used to produce the image of the developing foetus seen on the monitor at upper left. Ultrasound can detect foetal disorders, and it helps establish foetal size and development and hence the expected date of delivery.
