Description
UK crop failure. Satellite image showing crop failure in the British Isles due to the long hot dry summer and autumn in 2003. The extensive brown areas show regions where plant growth is down on the previous year (2002). Green regions show increased plant growth. 2003 was one of the driest years ever recorded in the UK. This meant that crops that are planted in autumn, such as rape and wheat, failed to germinate. 30% of rape fields failed to seed properly, and will have to replaced with another crop or resown in the spring. This could have a detrimental effect on wildlife that relies on rapeseed for some of its winter food. Data from the MODIS instrument.
