Paranthropus crassidens. Side view of the lower jawbone and teeth making up the type specimen of the australopithecine hominid Paranthropus crassi- dens (SK6). It was discovered at Swartkrans in South Africa in 1947, and described by Scottish palaeontologist Robert Broom. It is now known as Paranthropus robustus, which means robust equal of man". The specimen consists of the left mandible (lower jaw) with large molars and premolars. This robust australopithecine was heavily built and its diet included vegetarian food. The face was flattened and the lower jaw powerful. This species lived from 2.2 to 1 million years ago in southern Africa."
