Description
Diamond. Tweezers with rough cut diamonds. Diamond is the hardest mineral, and is used for decorative jewellery & as an industrial abrasive. Diamond is a crystalline form (allotrope) of carbon. The crystals may be colourless or tinted yellow, brown, grey or green. Diamond is so hard because each carbon atom is linked directly to four neighbours. Diamonds are found in kimberlite rocks in volcanic vents, and in the sedimentary rocks associated with erosion of kimberlite. It is thought that diamonds form when carbon is subjected to extreme pressures and temperatures underground.
