Description
Tuberculosis and cholera research. These test tubes are from the laboratory of the German bacteriologist Robert Koch (1843-1910), who isolated the bacteria responsible for both diseases. He identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis (left) in 1882, and Vibrio cholerae (right) in 1883. Koch is considered one of the founders of modern medical bacteriology, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1905. Artwork from the seventh volume (first period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
