Description
Tsetse fly (Glossina sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This view from below shows the two compound eyes (red) either side of the proboscis, extending upwards to top centre. The other mouthparts are labial and sensory palps. At bottom, the thorax and the two front legs are seen. This blood-sucking parasitic fly is found in tropical Africa. The proboscis is used to pierce the skin of its host to feed on blood. The tsetse fly transmits Trypanosoma protozoa, which cause sleeping sickness in humans.
