Description
Trifid nebula (M20), optical image. The Trifid Nebula is a rare combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula (red), a reflection nebula (blue) and a dark nebula (dark 'gaps'). It is a starbirth region, where gases coalesce into stars. The nebula lies in the constellation Sagittarius, although its distance from Earth is unclear. Imaged by the Wide-Field Imager camera attached to ESO's (European Southern Observatory) La Silla Observatory, Chile.
