Description
Oiled bird. Treatment of a bird contaminated with crude oil. This bird is being fed prior to being cleaned. This bird is being prevented from grooming its feathers with its beak to prevent it from ingesting oil and being poisoned. The detergents used to disperse oil slicks are also poisonous to wildlife. This bird was contaminated by a spill of about 70,000 tonnes of crude oil from the Sea Empress off the coast of Milford Haven, Wales, in February 1996. Photographed at an emergency centre opened by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).
