Artist's Description
Townsend's big-eared bat. View of a Townsend's big-eared bat (Plecotus townsendii). These bats commonly inhabit caves and abandoned mines. They range from the western United States down to Mexico. The Townsend's big-eared bat will emerge late in the evening to forage. They are swift highly manoeuverable fliers and they prey on small moths and insects such as lacewings, flies and dung beetles. They have become an endangered species due to human-introduced predators such as domestic cats. Bats are the only mammals that are capable of sustained flight. Photographed in Boulder County, Colorado, USA.
