Description
Torture instrument. 19th-century artwork of an instrument of torture used against early Christians. This device was described in a letter of 1823 as being from the collection of Irish traveller, painter and archaeologist Edward Dodwell (1767-1832). It had been found in one of the catacombs in Rome, where early Christian martyrs had been interred. It was described as a type of scourge (whip). Published in Volume 21 (1826-7) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
