Artist's Description

Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885), US naturalist. Peale's father Charles Willson Peale founded a museum in 1786 in Philadelphia, with the Peale Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, established in 1814. Titian Peale helped with collecting and preserving specimens for display. Peale was elected to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia in 1816. He was noted for his drawings of butterflies and birds. Peale took part in expeditions to Florida, Georgia and the Rocky Mountains, and was chief naturalist for the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838 to 1842. His later career was as a photographer after the museum went bankrupt. Portrait painted circa 1870.
