Artist's Description

Thylacosmilus atrox mammal, artwork. This marsupial mammal was about the size of a jaguar. Its fossils have been found in Argentina, dating to the Pliocene. It was a carnivore, and is an example of convergent evolution, where different species under the same evolutionary pressures evolve to form similar body shapes and functions. Here, the teeth are similar to those of the sabre-toothed cats, to which this animal was only distantly related. Differences include the elongated chin flap.
