Description
Three-jet event. Electronic display of a three-jet event created from an electron-positron collision in the ALEPH particle detector at the LEP accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The display is a cross- section of the detector, with the beam tube in the centre (blue) surrounded by various detector components. The annihilation of the electron and positron has created enormous energy which condensed into a quark, an antiquark and a gluon (carrier of the strong nuclear force). Although too short-lived to be detected directly, these three particles decay into jets of hadrons which are detected.
