Description
Thomas Warton (1728-1790), British poet. Warton studied at Trinity College, Oxford, where his degrees included Bachelor of Divinity (B.D., 1767). He was rector of Kiddington in Oxfordshire from 1771, the year he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He was Poet Laureate of England and Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford University, from 1785 to 1790. He had been Professor of Poetry at Oxford for ten years from 1757. His poems include 'The Pleasures of Melancholy' (1747). Artwork from Nichols's 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858.
