Description
Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), British naturalist. Nuttall is best known for the work he carried out in North America from 1808 to 1841. He travelled widely, collecting many animal and plant specimens, publishing on plants (including trees) and birds. He was curator of the botanical gardens at Harvard University from 1825 to 1834, and worked at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences from 1836 to 1841. This engraving by James Thomson (1788-1850) is based on a painting by William Derby (1786-1847). The caption refers to Nutall as a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London (FLS). Nuttall was also a member of the American Philosophical Society.
