Description
Exterior of the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP), at Sellafield, UK. THORP takes spent fuel from UK and foreign nuclear power plants. The spent fuel is then treated with solvents to remove the remaining uranium and the plutonium that is created in the fuel cycle. The uranium, in its oxide form, is sent for storage. The plutonium may either be stored, be used by fast breeder reactors or used in the manufacture of atomic weapons. The residue may contain isotopes of use to the medical and scientific research communities. In the foreground of the site are 'low-loader' railway trucks carrying white fuel transport flasks.
