Description
The Pentagon. Satellite image of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defence. It is located in Virginia, just outside the US capital city of Washington DC. North is at right. The Pentagon (opened 1943) is one of the largest office buildings in the world. Each of the five sides is 280 metres long, and the building is 24 metres high (5 floors). Over 20,000 people work here, and over 8000 cars can be parked in the large car parks seen here. The Pentagon is on the banks of the Potomac River, a small channel of which is seen at lower right. This image was taken by the Ikonos satellite on 7 September 2001. See image T835/266 for the destruction caused by the terrorist attack of 11 September 2001.
