Artist's Description
The Organ. Basalt column formation known as The Organ in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This jointed formation is on a cliff-face near Giant's Causeway, a similar formation. It consists of close-packed hexagonal columns of basalt. Basalt is a fine-grained extrusive rock found in most lava flows. The Organ, like Giant's Causeway, formed when the continents of Europe and North America split apart some 60 million years ago. The lava flow resulting formed jointed hexagonal columns as it contracted on cooling.
