Description
Jewel Box star cluster. Enhanced optical image of the Jewel Box open star cluster (NGC 4755) in the constellation Crux. This cluster is renowned for the contrast in colour between its brightest star, Kappa Crucis, a red supergiant (centre), and the remaining bright stars which are blue/white supergiants. These massive stars are thought to be around 80,000 times more luminous than the Sun. This cluster lies around 7500 light years from Earth. This image was produced by a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera, which stores images electronically rather than on film.
