Description
The Elliptical Sun. Title page of Sol Ellipticus (1615, The Elliptical Sun), by the German Jesuit astronomer Christoph Scheiner (1573-1650). It was in this book that Scheiner published some of his early observations on sunspots. Scheiner observed sunspots in 1611, and subsequently disputed priority for this discovery with Galileo. The title page consists of Latin text with a picture of the Sun at top. Scheiner's patron, the Austrian Archduke Maximilian of Burgandy, is prominently mentioned. Towards bottom, Scheiner is described as a Jesuit (Societatis Jesu).
