Artist's Description
The Centenary Diamond. Weighing 273.85 carats (54.77 g), the flawless Centenary Diamond is the highest grade of colourless diamond. The original 599 carat rough diamond was found on July 17th, 1986, by the electric X-ray recovery system at the Premier Mine in South Africa. An underground room was built in the De Beers Diamond Research Laboratory in Johannesburg, South Africa, specifically for working on the diamond. In February 1991 the diamond was revealed in its final form. It is a modified heart-shaped brilliant cut, and has 247 facets; 164 on the pavilion and crown, and 83 on the girdle. It was insured for over US$100 million.
