Artist's Description
The Atlantic Telegraph (1865). Map of transatlantic cables from a document illustrating the history of telegraphy (see C026/8923). The map also shows the cables laid in the Mediterranean in the 1850s. In the Atlantic, both the failed 1858 cable and the successful 1866 cable were laid from Ireland to Newfoundland. The northern proposal of Shaffner and the southern French proposal are also shown. The 1866 cable was laid by the SS Great Eastern. Existing cables are listed (left and right; total of 12,850 kilometres) and the cross-section of the 1858 cable is shown at top left and top right. Published by George Washington Bacon (1830-1921).
