Artist's Description

Thalamus. Light micrograph of a section through the thalamus of the brain. There are two egg- shaped thalami in the brain, responsible for generating conscious awareness of sensations such as pain, touch and temperature. The thalami receive signals from all of the sensory pathways other than the sense of smell, and act as a relay station, transmitting them to the cortex (outer regions). Magnification unknown.
