Description
Teixobactin antibiotic, molecular model. This antibiotic drug is active against Gram positive bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics. It binds to the precursors of the lipids that build the bacterial cell wall, causing the cell to burst (lyse). It is highly unlikely that bacteria will evolve new lipids and so the chance of resistance developing is very low. The discovery of this antibiotic was announced in January 2015. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (light blue), hydrogen (yellow), nitrogen (dark blue) and oxygen (red).
