Table from Becher's Opuscula chymica (17th century). Johann Joachaim Becher (1635-1682) was a German physician and alchemist. This table classifies known substances under the headings minerae (minerals), metalla (metals), mineralia (mostly ores), salia (salts), decomposita (inorganic materials), terrae (mainly oxides), distillata (mineral acids), olea (includes vitriol, water-glass and tuprentine), limi (minerals) and compositiones (secret preparations).
