Artist's Description

T Tauri star. Artwork of a type of young, cool, rapidly-rotating star known as a T Tauri star. This star has not yet entered the hydrogen-burning (main-line) phase of stellar evolution. It is still forming from a stellar nebula and has an associated disc (yellow) from which it gathers mass. Material from the disc is seen following the lines of the star's magnetic field and entering at the pole (upper centre). The strong magnetic field produces many starspots (cooler, darker regions at left of star). T Tauri stars also lose mass extensively through stellar winds.
