Description
Surgical amphitheatre. Surgical students and teachers at a clinic overseen by US brain surgeon William Williams Keen (1837-1932). This amphitheatre is at Jefferson Medical College Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where Keen taught as a professor from 1889 to 1907. Keen had graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1862, and lectured here from 1866. Keen was one of the first American surgeons to adopt Lister's antisepsis approach in surgery. Keen retired in 1907. He received many honorary degrees, and his awards included being made an officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium. Photographed on 10 December 1902.
