Artist's Description

Surgeon's set. This comprehensive set of surgeon's instruments is from England and dates from about 1850. It includes a tourniquet, forceps, scissors, amputation instruments including a bone saw, knives and scalpels, a trephine for making a hole in the skull when treating head injuries, probes and catheters. Anaesthesia and antiseptic surgical techniques were introduced in the second half of the 19th century. This allowed the development of more refined surgical techniques and reduced infection, and survival rates greatly improved.
