Artist's Description
This image, made by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft in early 1991, demonstrates several events in the formation of the surface of Venus. The oldest events were the formation of domes and ridges by sub-surface lava movements. The valleys between the ridges were then filled with radar- dark lava flows. Following this, a series of fractures extended across the surface. Finally, a relatively recent meteorite impact caused the 60km-wide crater at bottom right. This image covers an area of about 600km by 545km, and is part of the Ovda Regio in the equatorial continent Aphrodite Terra.
