Description
Mating stick insects. Male (smaller) and female stick insects (Achrioptera punctipes) mating. This stick insect lives in the rainforests of Madagascar. At a length of 24 centimetres, the female is twice the size of the male. The male is brightly coloured, but the female is drab and resembles a twig. Although some female stick insects reproduce asexually by parthenogenesis, A. punctipes reproduces sexually and must mate before producing eggs.
