Description
Steppe mammoths (Mammuthus trogontherii), illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal dates from 600,000 to 370,000 years ago, during the Middle Pleistocene of Eurasia. It weighed up to 10 tonnes and stood 4.5 metres tall at the shoulder and had large 5-metre-long tusks. It was one of the biggest proboscidea of all time. It lived in steppe regions and forest land, and was one of the first species that adapted well to cold regions due to its thick fur.
