Description
Stephen William Hawking (1942-2018), British physicist and cosmologist, with scientists at CERN's CMS detector in 2006. At centre is British physicist Tejinder Virdee (born 1952), originator of the CMS concept. CERN is the European particle physics laboratory, where experiments are carried out that help advance knowledge in areas such as quantum physics and cosmology. Hawking is in the mounting hall of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Hawking is famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes. He is confined to a wheelchair due to the condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1979 to 2009. In 2007, he founded the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge where he was Director of Research. Photographed on 29 September 2006.
