Description
Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas), 19th-century artwork. This marine mammal, related to the the manatee and the dugong, lived in the Bering Sea and was hunted to extinction in the 1700s. It grew up to 8 metres in length and weighed up to 11 tonnes. It was herbivorous with no teeth, feeding on seaweeds such as kelp using the grinding plates in its mouth. Artwork from the 22nd volume (second period of 1898) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
