Description
Statue of Alan Turing (1912-1954), British mathematician and computational scientist. He is best known for his work in developing computational theory and cracking the German Enigma codes during World War II, which allowed the allied forces to win several battles against Germany. He was convicted in 1952 of the then illegal act of homosexuality, and took his own life shortly after in 1954. Turing is holding an apple, the fruit that he laced with cyanide to commit suicide, and also a symbol of forbidden love. This commemorative statue stands in Sackville Gardens, Manchester, UK.
