Description
Stained glass workshop. 19th century artwork of workers in a stained glass window workshop. At left, the lead for the windows is being bent into the correct shape, while a worker is using bellows to fuel a small furnace. At centre, the glass is being cast into shape, and at right painters are adding colours to the glass. Stained glass, as an art form, dates from the 10th and 11th century, and was used extensively in medieval European churches. In Britain and France, the craft of stained glass was lost after the Reformation and the French Revolution respectively, but was then extensively revived in the 19th century. Artwork taken from Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), France, circa 1880.
