Artist's Description

Sphalerite mineral. 19th-century illustration of crystals of the zinc mineral sphalerite. This mineral consists of zinc sulphide, and is also called zinc blende, black jack, and ruby jack. It forms large tetrahedral crystals, with details of the crystal geometry shown in the artworks at centre and lower centre. This artwork, dated 1804, is from 'British Mineralogy', issued between 1802 and 1817 by British naturalist James Sowerby (1757-1822).
