Description
Spearfishing. Diver ascending from a practice dive at 26 metres for the US National Freedive Spearfishing Championships. He is using a speargun to hunt fish. The spear remains attached to the speargun, preventing the prey from escaping. The hunter is wearing a wetsuit, gloves, flippers and a mask, but no breathing equipment. This makes it easier to stalk the prey, but requires the hunter to use freediving techniques, diving and swimming on a single deep breath. Shallow water blackout (loss of consciousness) caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain (cerebral hypoxia) is a danger freedivers face during the ascent. Photographed in Isalmorada, Florida, USA.
