Artist's Description
South American camelid, 17th-century artwork. There are four main species of camelids in South America. Llamas and alpacas are domesticated, while guanacos and vicunas roam wild. Alpacas, smaller than llamas, are bred for their fur, while llamas are used as beasts of burden. Artwork from 'De medicina Brasiliensi libri quatuor' (Four books of Brazilian medicine, 1648) by Dutch physician and naturalist Willem Piso (1611-1678).
