Description
Solar Physics Observatory (SPO), in South Kensington, London, UK. The SPO was founded by the Royal Commission on Scientific Instruction and the Advancement of Science, who recommended setting up a government observatory to study solar physics. The War office then appointed the Commission's Secretary Joseph Norman Lockyer (1836-1920) to establish the SPO in 1875. In 1890, the SPO became part of the Royal College of Science and had an importance second only to that of the Greenwich Observatory. Lockyer remained Director of the SPO until it was moved to Cambridge in 1911. Photographed in 1908.
