Skin cancer research. Researcher studying tropical fish as part of research into melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Until 1993, it was thought that only the sun's shorter, UV-B rays were cancer-causing. New findings were published by researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA. They found that malignant melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, can be induced by the longer UV-A rays as well as UV-B, and that two visible light wavelengths, violet and blue, may act similarly. The findings in tropical fish susceptible to melanoma were extrapolated to humans. Photographed in 2006.
