Description
Simon Newcomb (1835-1909), Canadian-US astronomer. Newcomb was born in what was then the British colony of Nova Scotia. In 1854 he moved to the USA, graduating in 1858 from Harvard University. In 1877, he became director of the Nautical Almanac Office, and was professor of mathematics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University from 1884. He received many awards, including the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1874) and the Copley Medal of the Royal Society (1890). This photograph dates from between 1905 and 1945. It is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
