Description
Silicon atoms in graphene sheet. Scanning transmission electron micrograph (STEM) showing the 'dancing' motions of silicon atoms (centre, yellow) in a sheet of graphene, an isomer of carbon. The silicon clusters, composed of six atoms, were pinned in place by pores in the graphene sheet, allowing researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA, to directly image the material. The results were published in 2013.
