Description
Ship's radar. Silhouette of a man by radar equipment on a ship. Radar (radio detection and ranging) is a means of detecting objects which may otherwise be too distant or small to see. The horizontal bars seen here rotate and send out signals. Objects in the path of the signals reflect them, and they are detected on their return. In this way, a picture can be built up of the ship's surroundings. By measuring the time it takes the signals to return, the distance to the object can be calculated. If an object is moving away from or towards the transmitter, the change in the reflected signal's frequency (doppler effect) allows measurement of the object's speed.
